How I wrote Movements

Addison cafe210

A very long time ago, just after Michelle and I were married, Michelle asked me, “Do you have any dreams you’d like to accomplish one day?

From out of nowhere I told her, “I’m going to write a book one day.” Until that moment I had never thought about writing a book. I didn’t even know what I would write a book about. I just knew one day I would write.

A few years later my love of history led me to the discovery that it is movements that change the world—people committed to a common cause. My study of the Scriptures led me to the realisation that Jesus founded a missionary movement that he intended would one day span the globe and reach every tribe, and people and nation.

For the last twenty years I have been a student of movements that change the world and specifically church planting movements. The driving purpose of a church planting movement is to make disciples of Jesus Christ and then mobilize them to reach their world of relationships and start new churches—everywhere. We do this because through his death on the Cross, Jesus is the Saviour of the world.

I studied missionary movements in the New Testament and throughout history. I studied contemporary movements around the world. I looked at movements through the lenses of sociology and business literature. I read everything I can get my hands on. And I talked to people.

I visited China, Africa, India, the US, Britain and Europe and met with practitioners and listened to what they are learning and what God is doing. Gradually I began to detect some recurring characteristics of dynamic movements.

The next challenge was turning what I had learned into a book that would get published.
