Research on movements

Somehow these guys were able to combine being effective practitioners with research into movements that multiply disciples and churches. Pray for their neglected loved ones.

Justin White, Recovering Jesus’ Approach to Missionary Training for 21st Century Sending, Phd. Diss., Columbia International University (May, 2021).

Dr. White examines Jesus’ model for reproducing disciples and missionaries in light of 21st century sending paradigms.  With special emphasis on the “CMT” as developed by the IMB (International Mission Board), White evaluates both content and outcomes within the Galilean ministry and offers practical handles for application.  Contributions: White gives significant attention to examination and establishment of “apostolic” leadership as presented in the NT as well as discussion on the use and intended application of narrative descriptions of the apostolic task. 

Steven Robert Smith, An Evaluation of Training for Trainers (T4T) as an Aid for Developing Sustained Church Planting Movements (CPMs). Phd. Diss., University of South Africa (Sept. 2014). 

Dr. Smith dedicates this volume to evaluate the combination of the 3/3rd’s (T4T) process with the ‘Four Fields’ illustration of the CMT.  By evaluating the necessity of each component of the CMT (Entry, Gospel, Discipleship, Church Formation and Leadership Development) within a 3/3rd mentorship process Smith’s research seeks answers to significant questions regarding sustainability in movements. 

Joseph Gordy, A Systems Dynamics Perspective on the Sustainability of Church Planting Movements in North India, Phd. Diss., Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Dec. 2015). 

Dr. Gordy’s research is focused on elements of sustainability as he evaluates five distinct “CPM’s” across North India.  Gordy employs tools and principles from “systems dynamics” to evaluate ongoing diagnostics within these movements with specific focus on ecclesiology and leadership development. 

Jesse Snodgrass, To Teach Others Also: An Apostolic Approach to Theological Education in Pioneer Missions. Phd. Diss., Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Dec. 2017). 

Dr. Snodgrass dedicates research to models of theological education and their impact in pioneer contexts.  After exploring challenges in existing models, Snodgrass offers alternatives to formal education emerging from the South Asian context designed for implementation in pioneering contexts.  Snodgrass’ chapters on the biblical basis for apostolic work and what he terms “apostolic theological education” provide practical handles (models and tools) for application in the CMT. 

J. Todd Lafferty, Developing Pastors and Teachers Within the Fivefold Framework of Ephesians 4:11 to Sustain Church Planting Movements. D.Miss. Diss. Malaysian Baptist Theological Seminary (Nov. 2020). 

Dr. Lafferty dedicates his study to the development on Pastor/Teachers across multiplying movements in North India.  Lafferty surveys the development of “CPM theory” across two decades of literature, criticism of such literature and response before presenting specific research on investment and development of pastors in multiplying movements among IMB teams in South Asia.
